Three Tales

Three Tales is a band from Belfast in which Ben McAuley plays guitar and sings, Des Mooney plays drums and James Smith plays bass. The band takes its name both from an opera by Steve Reich and a book by Gustave Flaubert. Their self-titled debut album was recorded over the space of a week in late 2007 by Ben, who works at Start Together studio in the Oh Yeah Music Centre and features contributions from Robyn G. Shiels (in whose band all of Three Tales play), among others.

The music is subtle, understated folk influenced indie-rock, which would appeal to fans of Will Oldham or Smog: “stirring, moving and incredibly powerful…a refreshingly different approach and sound,” says the Belfast Telegraph.

The band is fresh from an Irish tour with labelmates and friends Panda Kopanda in support of the record, which was described by ulstermusic.com as “absolutely mesmerizing… the best Irish record of 2008”.

Recent hometown shows in the Limelight and Queen’s University have been rapturously received, and the band has been asked to play at the Black Box’s March Bacchanal with many of Ireland’s leading lights. The record has already picked up radio play around Ireland, and a glowing full page review in the Irish News (“great… a nicely judged mix of twinkling, ringing and occasionally caustic guitars, funeral keys and deathly, dandering percussion”).
